Discovering Your North Star in the Creative Writing Journey

Updated: Aug 19

Anyone who has attended the Writer's Circle I facilitate each week will tell you that one of the first things we discuss when looking at a new project is this fun and important hack.

Something inspired you to write the story you are working on. What was it?

Whatever it was, it likely formed a vivid image in your mind that prompted feelings or emotions on a high 'frequency.' It sparked your imagination.

Put that image up where you can see it regularly. Every time you look at or think of it the original spark will reignite and add fuel to that fire. This source of inspiration is not just important; it’s a key step in your writing journey. It is your "North Star."

The energy from that first inspiration can profoundly influence your writing. When you revisit this source, you keep the fire of creativity burning bright and develop a deeper grasp of your message. It is a wellspring of wisdom. Each time you tap into this source you are reminded of your original experience and it grows. Your mind is fed by it. Thus, you add richness and authenticity to your narrative.

Reflecting on your “North Star” can lead to significant breakthroughs. It often highlights a truth inside you that longs for expression. Identifying this focus can unveil the deeper elements in your story, making it richer, fuller, and brimming with intent.

So, what does your North Star look like? Picture it in your own unique way—a striking image, a powerful quote, a symbol or a sound. Music often conjures up these images. If music is the source, what is going on inside of you? What image and emotion does it generate? Creating a physical representation of this guiding light can serve as a vivid and vital reminder of your core message. It can help you stay focused whenever you feel lost or get stumped in your writing.

Make it a habit to keep your North Star visible in your writing space. It will keep stoking that fire of inspiration. Contemplate on it. Ruminate. What else is lurking below the surface waiting to be discovered? What questions does it prompt? What must you figure out? What is it that captivates you? It may seem simple, but experience has proven there is often something more significant going on. Whatever it is, embrace it like you would a friend. It is your friend!

Like a friend, your North Star gives you energy. It shines a light of wisdom and insight when you may get lost in the weeds of words, or buried under layers of story you must wade through. It can pull you out of a writer's rut. A thing that at times is no small feat!

Honour your initial inspiration, give it the time, space and attention it deserves. Let it breathe and flow. Embrace the process. Enjoy it!

I wish you the best with your story. Happy writing!
